The star of Billy Elliot has found another starring role – playing himself in a BBC documentary. Jamie Bell, 15, who wowed critics and filmgoers alike, but who missed out at this year’s Oscars, will have a camera crew shadowing him, as he balances his schoolwork with an acting career.

The documentary’s director is Stephen Daldry, who directed the teenager in the moving story of how a young boy from a mining village discovers he loves to boogie. Jamie is said to be looking forward to playing himself and his friends claim that fame will not go to his head because he wants to be a “brilliant actor, not just a star.” Also included in the film, which is to be made by independent company Tiger Aspect, will be a video diary, made by the youngster himself

As well as the documentary, Jamie is set to star in a new British film called Who Goes There, a wartime drama set in Wales. The teenager will pay Dai, the son of a conscientious objector, who befriends a U-boat captain after his sub puts ashore by mistake in Wales.
