Twenty-four customers at a Beverly Hills cafe this week found out there is such a thing as a free lunch when Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart stumped up $700 to pay everyone’s tab. It seems the waifish actress was so embarrassed by the racket her baby was making, she packed up her lunch and paid the bill for the two dozen strangers dining at Mauro’s Cafe.

“She paid all the bills and picked up the baby and her food and left before any customers realised that lunch was on her,” said one onlooker. “It’s not unusual for mothers with crying babies to take them outside for a while or even to leave. It’s not often that they also pay everyone’s lunch bills, but Calista did this. Everyone was surprised at her generosity when the manager informed them a couple of minutes after she had gone that she had paid for everything herself.”

Calista, who adopted baby Liam six months ago, is the subject of a Lifetime network Intimate Portrait special which kicked off the channel’s new season in the US on Monday. During the one-hour documentary, she conveys her fears about being a new mum.

“I worry about being a single parent and I worry about all the issues when you have children,” says Calista. “But it is the best thing I have ever done in my life.”
