In the latest move in the slow unravelling of what was once thought one of Hollywood’s strongest marriages, Nicole Kidman has spoken about her desire to raise her and estranged husband Tom Cruise’s two adopted children in Australia.

“Sydney is my home town… and ultimately it’s where I want to raise my children,” said the Eyes Wide Shut star in an interview with the Australian magazine Women’s Day. She is expected to return to her native country after completing the filming of her latest project The Hours next month.

“I don’t want to work for the rest of the year. I’m just trying to take care of my kids,” said the Moulin Rouge star. “I want to have two kids who grow up and say, ‘I’m happy, I’m healthy and I love you, Mum’. I want to know them and I’m willing to give up everything for that.”

The announcement is likely to lead to increased confrontation with Tom, a committed member of the Church of Scientology, who has made his own wish to bring up the children in the US according to precepts of his faith well known.

Although the children have been staying with the Mission Impossiblestar in the former family home in Pacific Palisades, California, Tom is tied into various work projects which will involve him criss-crossing the globe over the next few years.
