A grief stricken Catherine Zeta-Jones returned to Wales this week for the funeral of her beloved grandmother Kathleen Fair, who died on Saturday aged 79 at her three-bedroom council home in Swansea. The Mask Of Zorro beauty was comforted by family and friends on Thursday evening at a requiem mass held at St Joseph’s Cathedral in Swansea.
Though Catherine was said to be worried that crowds might disturb the solemn affair – perhaps explaining the absence of her husband Michael Douglas – she insisted on flying in to pay her respects. “They were great pals and Catherine was devastated to hear she had died,” said a family friend. “She might be a movie star but her family is very special to her.”
Catherine, named after grandmothers Kathleen and Zeta, had kept in close contact with Kathleen, who flew to New York last year for the 31-year-old’s star-studded wedding, calling the trip the “experience of a lifetime”. The two last saw each other eight months ago when the Welsh actress brought son Dylan across the Atlantic for a visit.
The actress’ grandfather, Billy Fair, a retired postman, died last April. Her paternal grandmother Zeta, aged 86, lives with Catherine’s father Dai and mother Pat in Swansea.
The Entrapment star will attend the funeral on Friday at the same cathedral.
