Everyone from Robbie Williams to Rupert Everett has been named as possible successors to the James Bond throne. But it now seems the frontrunner to follow in the stylish footsteps of Pierce Brosnan may be little-known Scotsman Gerard Butler.
Gerard, who appeared briefly in the 1999 Bond instalment Tommorow Never Dies, says he’s been approached by producer Barbara Broccoli about stepping into the famed role once 48-year-old Pierce Brosnan retires the moniker.
“It’s very flattering and I can’t say much more than that,” reports the 6ft 2in actor. “I was getting phone calls from Los Angeles saying that it had been announced on CNN that I had been named the new Bond. Since then I’ve had calls from Israel and South Africa.”
Thirty-two-year-old Gerard, once fired from a Glasgow law firm, used his thick dark mane and piercing green eyes to chilling effect as the Prince of Darkness in Wes Craven’s Dracula 2001. He’s now set to be a major Hollywood commodity with his next film, an adaptation of the Michael Crichton best seller Timeline.
Pierce Brosnan was expected to don the famous Bond tuxedo just one more time before relinquishing the role, however, recent comments made by the star hint he may not have had his last martini.
