Hollywood actor and political activist Martin Sheen has been sentenced to three years’ probation and fined $500 in Los Angeles. The star of The West Wing pleaded guilty to charges of trespassing at a US military airbase during a demonstration against the “Star Wars” missile defence system.
Martin, who entered a guilty plea, said he would still oppose the controversial military project. “I can’t think of a worse thing to inflict on the universe than nuclear weapons in outer space, and all of them pointed to the Earth. I have a prior engagement with The West Wing, another year on my contract and I can’t risk losing and going to prison for six months. Morally, I’m bound to fulfil my contract. That was the whole motivation.”
The actor plays the US president in the popular TV series and, as a prominent Democrat, has been outspoken about the White House’s current incumbent. In an interview, Martin, who has been arrested 70 times for protesting about various issues, said: “George W Bush is like a bad comic working the crowd, a moron, if you’ll pardon the expression.”
