Broadway musical Cabaret has a new Sally Bowles – and it’s none other than Brooke Shields. The newly-wed actress flew to the Big Apple just three days after her honeymoon to start rehearsals on the Sam Mendes-directed musical, which is playing at her old stomping ground, cult Seventies disco Studio 54.
“I definitely can identify with Sally,” said Brooke about her new role. “I like being able to push myself past the place of comfort. I have triumphed personally past everything I have gone through and to go back and revisit that is the hardest part of the character to play.”
Brooke vamps it up in the theatre production, which opened in 1998. Green fingernails, over-rouged cheeks, smoky eyes and what reviewers have described as: “A tart acidity” is how the actress is playing the pre-war Berlin club chanteuse. The Blue Lagoon star is no stranger to treading the boards, having played Rizzo in a revival of Grease, as well as having done several stints in The Vagina Monologues.
And for all of you waiting to find out what Brooke’s next production will be, you need wait no longer. It’s a baby. “As soon as I possibly can do it,” she says. “It’s honestly the main focus after this show.” She and her husband, Spin City writer Chris Henchy, live in L.A. with their dog Darla.
