GRIEF-STRICKEN BY THE DEATH OF HIS MOTHER HUGH GRANT PLANS TO TAKE TIME OUT FROM ACTING

With his role in the hugely successful Bridget Jones’s Diary still fresh in everyone’s memory, Hugh Grant has decided to take a break from acting and pursue a second career as a writer.

The instigation for this sea change has less to do with burning literary zeal, however, than with the fallout from the recent death of his beloved mother. The star was devastated when 63-year-old Fynvola succumbed to cancer last month. “My mother was the most important woman in the world to me and I am finding it hard to live without her. I’m not interested in pursuing any acting roles at the moment I need to take some time out and get my head together,” he says.

The 40-year-old Four Weddings And A Funeral star also revealed how intense media interest from photographers wanting to capture a shot of him at the funeral had increased his suffering. “I can’t believe the morals of this world sometimes,” he said in an interview with British tabloid the Daily Express. “I was devastated at losing my mother and I wasn’t given the space to grieve.

I had photographers chasing me to get a picture at the funeral. For God’s sake, I’m a person and should be treated like one.” “It was a private moment that was personally heartbreaking for me and I should have the luxury of doing my grieving away from the prying eyes of the media. Much of my decision to put my acting career on hold stems from that moment because I realised how horrible it can be in this business.”

In the same interview, the actor also revealed that his mum was cautious about his relationship with ex-girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley, advising him to think carefully before marrying her. He then goes on to admit he has found it difficult to meet anyone who matched up to Fynvola in his eyes. Hugh spoke of his future plans during the after-show party for the new British comedy The Parole Officer at trendy London watering hole the Atlantic Bar.

As far as his new career is concerned, he added: “Who knows, I may decide never to return to films at all. I’ve got to find out what makes me happy.” The Notting Hill star recently wrapped filming About A Boy, an adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel.
