Humour, talent, success, passion and respect from his peers. These were just some of the criteria used by readers of men’s magazine Esquire to single out Scottish actor Ewan McGregor as Britain’s sharpest man. Pushing England soccer captain David Beckham into second place in the reader’s poll, the Trainspotting star admitted that he may have been seen as more eligible for the award since his personal life has calmed down.
Heading up a poll which included the likes of Ewan’s friend Jude Law, Planet Of The Apes star Tim Roth and Oscar-winning American Beauty director Sam Mendes, the Star Wars actor says he has left his wilder days behind him. “I think there’s a craziness I got out of my system. I used to spend a lot of time not being at home, in bars and stuff. Then I realised I didn’t want to be in Soho with a bunch of people I didn’t really know.”
The 30-year-old actor, who stars with Nicole Kidman in the new film Moulin Rouge, is married to French production designer Eve Mavrakis. They are expecting their second child in October 2001 – the couple’s daughter Clara Mathilde was born in 1996.
In the article, Ewan also hints that he may branch out into music after singing in Moulin Rouge, which is scheduled to open in Britain next in October. At the moment he is learning to play the banjo after Eve bought him one as a present.
Music is not Ewan’s only extra curricular activity. Having recently helped form the production company Natural Nylon with friends Jonny Lee Miller, Sean Pertwee, Jude Law and Sadie Frost, the star hopes to make innovative films that do not conform to Hollywood standards with his actor chums.
The Brassed Off actor has just finished filming the next instalment of the Star Wars saga, Episode II: Attack Of The Clones.
