Denzel Washington, known for playing the good guy in Hollywood, has changed his tack. In Training Day, his latest flick, the actor plays a corrupt police officer in the LA narcotics unit – and at the Venice Film Festival he revealed that he loved playing a baddie.
“I do what pleases me and I only choose roles I like,” he told reporters at a press conference in the Italian city, just before the movie’s premiere. “I am sure some people won’t like it but I’ll live with that. This is called show business. It’s not that I have a relationship with my fans. I appreciate them a lot. But, I mean, I don’t follow them home or anything. ”
In his new movie, the actor, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the US Civil War saga Glory, plays Officer Alonzo Harris, a bent cop who tests the moral strength of a young officer, played by Ethan Hawke.
“We shot the film in some of the most dangerous places in LA, and perhaps in the world,” said Denzel. “But we never had a problem. People there were happy to be given responsibility and we were determined to live up to it.”
