Pearl Harbor star Ben Affleck and former star of the US TV series Charmed, Shannen Doherty, have both found themselves face-to-face with police authorities of late. Unfortunately it wasn’t on film but in real life – proving even Hollywood stars can’t escape the long arm of the law.
Beverly Hills, 90210 alum Shannen was sentenced to five days of work release on Tuesday stemming from a December arrest for drunken driving. Taking into account Shannen’s recent teen lectures on the dangers of driving while intoxicated, a Los Angeles judge handed down the minimum punishment. While she could have faced up to two days in prison, Shannen looks set to make amends picking up roadside rubbish instead.
“She will perform light-to-medium duty work,” says Deputy District Attorney Ian Morse. “That could include trash pick-up, weeding or some type of gardening program.” Shannen was pulled over by authorities on December 28 for driving under the influence. In April she pleaded no contest to the charges.
Oscar winner Ben Affleck, just released from a voluntary month-long stint in rehab for alcoholism, was ticketed by Georgia authorities for speeding last week. However, don’t look for Ben to join Shannen on the freeway chain gang. The Good Will Hunting star spent less than 25 minutes in the sheriff’s office before posting a cash bond of $1,114 and leaving town.
Ben was behind the wheel of a black Cadillac driving towards Macon after a holiday in nearby Savannah – a favourite spot of the Hollywood heart-throb since he shot Forces Of Nature there – when officers clocked him at 114mph, more than 40mph over the speed limit. “He was ticketed for speeding,” reports a deputy from the Treutlen County Sheriff’s Department. “But we ticket thousands of people for speeding, so we’re not gonna make a big deal of it.”
For the record, deputies barely recognised the famous actor and said he was a perfect gentlemen. “They said you’d have never known it was him,” added sheriff Wayne Hooks. “He had on an old mechanic’s jacket with somebody else’s name on it and a little round pair of glasses.”
