Playing a young mother in the upcoming tear-jerker Riding In Cars With Boys has inspired actress Drew Barrymore to patch things up with her own estranged mum.
“There’s a scene where my waters break and I yell out, ‘Mom’, and it was sort of like me calling out to her,” says the Charlie’s Angels star. “It was very cathartic.”
The 26-year-old beauty, who married comedian Tom Green earlier this year, had been on poor terms with her mother Jaid since at least 1992 when the ET star first severed contact between them. A brief reconciliation followed, but, the two clashed again in 1995 creating a seemingly insurmountable breach.
The problems between mother and daughter were both numerous and very public. Drew, who posed for Playboy in January 1995, was embarrassed by her mum’s own graphic pictorial in the mag later that year. And bitter feelings surfaced after Jaid’s unsuccessful attempts to auction Drew’s baby clothes and keepsakes over the internet.
However, last year the two decided to attempt a reconciliation. Hubby Tom escorted Drew to the first meetings, but later the mother-daughter pair managed to go it alone.
“Eventually we got to a place where we could hang out on our own, but there were a lot of real crazy emotions flying all over the place,” recalls Drew. “The one thing my mom said to break the ice was that we had really needed to separate to become our own people, before we could come together again. I respect that.”
Drew, who is scheduled to host US sketch comedy programme Saturday Night Live this weekend, stars opposite James Woods in Riding In Cars With Boys which opens across the US on October 19 before hitting UK screens in December.
