Celebrated actress Kate Winslet spoke out on Monday in her first major interview since splitting with husband Jim Threapleton nearly three months ago. And while the Titanic beauty admits to suffering some “dark hours” recently, she says she “still absolutely believes in true love”.

Kate, now dating American Beauty director Sam Mendes, says that she and Jim tried to change each other which may have ultimately caused the breach. “Life with someone is very much about not wanting to change anything about that person and not allowing them to change anything in you,” she told The Mirror in an exclusive interview. “Marriage is about the meeting of two minds and two souls and hoping that it is going to work forever. But sometimes it doesn’t, and that’s a shame.”

The two-time Oscar nominee has been in Texas filming The Life Of David Gale with Kevin Spacey. And while her positive outlook and undying spirit have returned, she says that the past few months have been difficult.

“We all have our dark hours, we all go there, but I don’t wallow in it. I’ve always said that you have to hit rock bottom before you can pick yourself up again,” reveals the 26-year-old star. “As long as you understand that has to happen and as long as you know you have to get back to where you were, then it is fine.”

Kate, who next appears on screen opposite Dame Judi Dench in the Iris Murdoch biopic, credits her strength to the support of close friends and family. “It is important and crucial in life to surround yourself with good friends and people whom you trust and you really love. I’ve always had that from my family and friends, particularly this year and knowing that makes me strong and a good mother.”
