The star-studded cast of the upcoming film Ocean’s Eleven – including Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt – are set to visit a military base in Turkey to bring some holiday cheer to US and British soldiers fighting abroad.
“We’ve got troops over there in harm’s way. Why don’t we go over there and show it to them?’,” said Ocean’s Eleven producer Jerry Weintraub, the mastermind behind the planned tour. “George jumped up and said ‘great’ and everyone came on board.”
Jerry put in a call to former President George HW Bush and “two minutes later I got a phone call from the Pentagon and we got the ball rolling,” he says. “We wanted the soliders to know how we are behind them… how we care. We’re going there to eat with them and sleep there with them and bring them a Christmas present… We’re going to give them a hug from everybody in America because they’re out there on the front lines fighting this war for us.”
Co-stars Andy Garcia and Don Cheadle are also scheduled to make the trans-Atlantic trip, as will Jerry and director Steven Soderbergh. The crew will depart just a few hours after the film’s December 5 premiere in Los Angeles.
Troops stationed abroad will receive DVD copies of Ocean’s Eleven – which hits US screens on December 7 before opening in the UK early next year – as will crew members aboard 11 warships in the area. Following the military visit, the cast will go to London and Paris for promotional stints.
