He married his last wife Nicole Kidman in a candlelit ceremony at his Telluride ski lodge on Christmas Eve 1990. And the smart money is on Tom Cruise making an honest woman out of Spanish actress and Hollywood hotshot Penelope Cruz in the near future – with speculation of there being a civil ceremony on New Year’s Eve.
Even Tom’s first wife, Mimi Rogers, is pretty sure that her ex, one of the most powerful people in Hollywood, is going to make it legal. At a party in Los Angeles recently, Mimi commented on the questions surrounding the actor and his new flame. “Knowing Tom, it will be sooner than later,” she said.
The 39-year-old actor, who was married to fellow Scientologist Mimi for three years from 1987, is known to be a fan of marriage, having tied the knot twice already. Tom’s new love, who he met and and fell for on the set of Vanilla Sky, although raised a Catholic, is a practising Buddhist, although there are reports that Pen is attending Scientology classes at Tom’s side.
Tom’s second marriage was finally tied up amicably on November 12 this year, after a marathon meeting between the Cruise and Kidman camps. But the depth of Tom’s feeling for Pen has been more than evident – not only in the love scenes of their new movie, but out in public as well. During a shopping drip in Telluride, the actress was picking out some saucy negligees in boutique La Femme Fatale with her new beau. “Tom grabbed her round the waist, pulled her close and kissed her full on the mouth,” says an observer. “It was like a scene out of a movie.”
As well as playing together, Tom and Penelope’s careers are also entwined at the moment. Pre-Christmas, the two actors have a heavy schedule to promote Vanilla Sky around the world. The tour finishes in Sydney – Nicole’s home town – on December 20 and, following Christmas with his ex-wife and children, the Top Gun star’s agenda will be free. Who knows what he will schedule for January 31?
