Looking just as beautiful, glamorous and as much a star as her character Satine in Moulin Rouge, Nicole Kidman was mobbed by eager autograph hunters during a recent visit to LA’s Egyptian Theatre in support of the much-talked-about Baz Luhrmann musical.
The film, which has become something of a cultural phenomenon despite having grossed less than $60 million last summer in the US, has been re-released in the States and, with the Oscar run-up already under way, Nicole and her Moulin co-star Ewan McGregor have begun a second round of promotional appearances.
The Australian actress is also being tipped for an Oscar nomination for her role in The Others. “She should win the Academy Award this year because of the body of work of the two pictures,” says Moulin director Baz Luhrmann. “Having said that… she’s fabulous in The Others. But if the awards are about identifying unusual or exceptional achievement then she should be nominated for Moulin Rouge. She’s comic, she’s tragic and she sings and she dances. All categories are covered.”
If push comes to shove between the two movies, however, Baz was adamant that he go with whichever gave the Aussie star her best shot at the coveted statuette. “I wouldn’t discuss it with her people, I’d discuss it with her,” he says. “I’ll get everyone to sit down and say, ‘What’s the best shot here?’. We’ve got to make sure we push the right one. You’d think that because The Others has done more at the box office it’s the logical choice, but box office and Academy don’t necessarily align.”
