Hollywood’s brightest stars including Tom Hanks, Benicio Del Toro and Meg Ryan turned out on Monday night for the Los Angeles premiere of Michelle Pfeiffer’s latest movie, the heart-wrenching drama I Am Sam. The famed beauty, tipped for an Oscar for her role as a self-absorbed attorney, was joined by husband David E Kelley –the creator of Ally McBeal – and signed autographs for gathered fans as countless celebs arrived.
Co-star Sean Penn was there with his wife, actress Robin Wright Penn, and their children Dylan and Hopper. The notoriously guarded actor – also poised for Oscar glory – stars as a mentally challenged father facing a custody battle as his daughter grows up and begins to surpass him intellectually.
“I forgot I was watching an actor,” praised Stephen Gaghan, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Traffic, of Sean’s tour de force. “It’s bizarre. You really don’t think you’re seeing a performance.”
I Am Sam opens in New York and Los Angeles on December 28 to ensure eligibility for the Academy Awards. The film hits cinemas across the US on January 11 before crossing the pond early next year.
