The eight-year-old-daughter of screen star Clint Eastwood and her mother Francis Fisher were described as being “very, very lucky to be alive” by a Vancouver fire service worker yesterday after a fire at their home on Christmas Day.

The fire, which apparently broke out early on Tuesday morning, left the couple's daughter Francesca trapped in an upstairs room. Her mother screamed frantically from the lawn as the eight-year-old scrambled across the garage roof before jumping into the arms of neighbours. Both mother and daughter were taken to hospital; Francesca suffering from smoke inhalation and Frances, who played Kate Winslet’s mother in Titanic and appeared in Clint’s Academy Award-winning film Unforgiven, with severe burns to her hand.

The Dirty Harry star rushed to be with his former partner and their daughter, Francesca, after being notified of the fire. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Constable Christy Veenstra, who called the actor to tell him what had happened, said his reaction was “like any father would be who gets a call on Christmas Day about a fire. Shock. Very somber. His immediate reaction was to get to his daughter.”

Frances and Francesca had been living in Vancouver while Frances completed filming for an upcoming TV series entitled Glory Days. The cause of the fire isn’t known, but the house where they were staying is reportedly completely gutted. Frances and Clint became romantically involved in the 1980s.
