Perhaps when you’re tying the knot for the fifth time around, traditional marital conventions no longer carry such weight. More than a month shy of her fifth marriage, to Peruvian-born theatre director Percy Gibson, 68-year-old Joan Collins is already sporting a new wedding ring.
Although tradition has it that wearing a wedding band before the ceremony is bad luck, both Joan and her 36-year-old fiancé were sporting platinum versions when they enjoyed a romantic lobster, caviar and champagne supper at an Italian restaurant in Manhattan over the New Year. According to a spokeswoman for the actress, Miss Collins is so excited about her upcoming nuptials she just can’t wait until the February 17 wedding.
While staff at the restaurant claimed that Joan had shared news of a secret civil ceremony over the holiday period, spokeswoman Stella Wilson insisted that the Dynasty star is definitely not yet married. “Joan and Percy have absolutely not just got married. They have been out shopping for rings and Percy tells me that they have found the wedding bands so I guess they have been trying them on and showing them off.” She added: “Joan is spending a lot of time planning her big day.”
One of those plans has recently been confirmed. To ensure her big day goes off in regal style, Joan has recruited the Queen’s personal bagpipe player to perform at her wedding. The actress invited Pipe Major Jim Motherwell, 42, to play solo at her wedding after presenting him with a gold disc for his best selling CD The Queen’s Piper which raised funds for cancer charities. The Pipe Major’s regular occupation is serenading the British monarch every morning from below her bedroom window.
