Tom and Penelope – recipients of HELLO!’s Most Attractive Couple Of The Year distinction – met on the set of Cameron Crowe’s thriller Vanilla Sky and were instantly linked in the New York tabloids. The rumours were denied by both camps, but shortly after Tom and wife Nicole Kidman split in February, the pair were spotted canoodling stateside. In July, shortly after his 39th birthday bash in LA, they enjoyed a tropical holiday in Fiji and confirmed their burgeoning romance.
Penelope later admitted that for her it was absolutely love at first sight. “I really believe that happens, that you recognize that special person in an instant,” she told one magazine. “I think it happens to everyone, although maybe some people don’t want to recognize it, or they don’t see it that way.” It was some time before the Spanish stunner could act on her feelings, however. While filming Vanilla Sky Tom and Nicole were still very much an item, and Pen had no intention of coming between them.
“We were two people working together as friends,” she insists. “And then, over time, that turned into something deeper. But we only got involved later, in the summer.”
In a rare moment of candour the love-struck Tom gushed about Penelope. “As a person and on film, she invites you in. And she’s incredibly romantic, and yet real, you know? She’s beautiful,” he told Vanity Fair. “She’s a very skilled actress but has an effortless quality about her. You look at Audrey Hepburn. She had that kind of elegance and yet was accessible.”
Later he added: “I thought, ‘My God. I’m your boyfriend. You’re my girlfriend.’ Cruise and Cruz!”
A family may be on the cards for the homonym duo, though Penelope won’t say just when. “I’ve felt a maternal instinct since I was 13,” she told HELLO! in an exclusive interview. “One day I’d love to… But it’s not the right time.”
While the two remain mum on their honeymoon plans, the pair are likely to make an appearance in early February at Spain’s Goya Awards – the Spanish Oscars – where her film Sin Noticias De Dios competes in 13 categories. The Others, which Tom produced, is also a top contender.
