Academy Award winner Russell Crowe, again tipped for Oscar glory for A Beautiful Mind, has his heart set on a new role – that of proud father.
“I’ve been thinking about this for a long time,” the Gladiator hunk told USA Today. “I’d like to be a father. But it’s not something I can do by myself.”
“I’m a lot more patient now than before,” says the notorious bachelor. “But I’m counting the years. Even if I get married and have a baby tomorrow, I’m going to be 57 when the kid is 20. Frankly, this is starting to drive me nuts.”
Russell, currently drawing rave reviews stateside for his portrayal of troubled Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash, is single these days but learned a great deal about love in the past year. Speaking of his “gigantic” romance with his Proof Of Life co-star Meg Ryan, he told Entertainment Weekly that he owes the tousle-haried beauty an apology “for not being as flexible as I might have been. I don’t think I’ll ever make that mistake again.”
The antipodean heart-throb has been linked with a bevy of beauties, including the outrageous Courtney Love. However, he says that he and Kurt Cobain’s ex-wife have fallen out of late.
“I always had a lot of time for her until earlier this year, when she kind of verbally attacked a really good friend of mine,” he says. At the time, Courtney had reportedly suffered a miscarriage and some press reports suggested Russell might have been the father. He was disappointed after the Hole singer opted not to deny the rumours.
“She didn’t come out and say it wasn’t possible since there was no sexual relationship between us,” says the actor. “I don’t believe it’s the gentleman’s prerogative to ring up the media to deny a sexual liason. It’s ungallant.”
A Beautiful Mind opens in the UK on February 15.
