Hollywood’s newest power pair, Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz, thrilled thousands of fans last night in London with an hour-long walkabout just before the UK debut of Vanilla Sky - and a lucky few were treated to Tom’s increasingly popular habit of taking fans’ mobile phones and making spontaneous calls to their loved ones.
Girlfriend Penelope, stunning in a simple black jumper and crimson skirt, gave her beau the credit for the marathon red carpet jaunt. “It was Tom’s idea because he’s like that, he’s very generous,” said Penelope. “Some of the fans have been here for three hours.”
Explained the Jerry Maguire star: “Now is a good time for me in my life. I wanted to spend time out there with people who had waited so long. We were just having fun.”
Other stars who surely had a good time celebrating the film’s UK opening included Tom’s Mission Impossible 2 co-star Thandie Newton, author Salman Rushdie and TV celeb Dani Behr.
Tom and Penelope have been at every major premiere of Vanilla Sky around the world, and last night left as soon as the film began, jetting off to the next stop on the publicity tour.
