Antonio Banderas is to make his Broadway debut in a revival of the hit musical Nine. The Spanish heart-throb will take on the role of Guido in the production which is based on Federico Fellini’s classic film 8-1/2.
The Mark Of Zorro star - the only male in the ensemble - will play an Italian film director who suffers a midlife crisis which causes him to re-examine his numerous relationships with women.
When it opened in 1982 original production was nominated for 12 Tony nominations and scored a Best Musical Award.
This will not be Antonio's first venture into the genre. He starred opposite Madonna in the Oscar-winning, big-screen version of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Evita and was recently rumoured to have bagged the lead in a film adaptation of The Phantom Of The Opera. The official word from Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s people is that “no casting decisions have been made”, however.
Nine, which is to be directed by David Leveaux, will open at The Roundabout Theatre Company in January 2003.
