As the Oscar race hots up, Academy Award nominees Helen Mirren, Dame Judi Dench and Moulin Rouge star Nicole Kidman were busy picking up gongs on Wednesday at the London Film Critics Circle. Nicole’s co-star Ewan McGregor helped the Baz Luhrman-directed musical pick up a trio of awards, scoring a best actor nod while the film took the night’s top award as Best Picture.

Nicole, stunning in a black gown, was singled out as Actress of the Year at the Dorchester hotel ceremony, rounding out the film’s sweep. Dame Judi Dench, who was nominated Tuesday for a Best Actress Oscar, received a top female acting honour for her role in Iris, while her fellow Academy Award nominee Helen Mirren took home a Best Supporting Actress gong for her acclaimed performances in Gosford Park and Last Orders.

Heart-throb Ewan, sporting a smart pin-striped suit, was honoured as Best British Actor, beating out Oscar hopeful Jim Broadbent, nominated for Iris. Robert Altman’s Gosford Park was named British Film of the Year and French feel-good hit Amelie added to its existing mantle of accolades with the Foreign Film of the Year prize.

Former Ballykissangel star Colin Farrell won British Newcomer of the Year for Tigerland and Helen Fielding, Richard Curtis and Andrew Davies continued their award- winning streak, taking the Best British Screenwriters of the Year for Bridget Jones’s Diary.
