Despite the sheer number of Brits nominated in this year’s Oscars, it is the antipodeans who are the hot favourites to take the awards home, according to the latest figures in the HELLO! Oscar poll. In four of the six categories up for grabs, nominees from Down Under have gained staggering leads over the nearest competition.
Nicole Kidman, the star of all-singing, all-dancing – and almost all-Australian – Moulin Rouge, and A Beautiful Mind’s Russell Crowe have both jumped ahead of the rest of the contenders in the lead actor categories. New Zealand-born Russell currently has a clear majority of the vote, while Nicole has garnered a staggering 60 per cent.
On the other side of the camera, the boys from Down Under have also been strutting their stuff, with epic fantasy Lord Of The Rings dominating. New Zealand-born director Peter Jackson has won an incredible lead over the rest of the opposition for the best director Oscar. As for who our readers think should take home the prestigious best film award, Rings currently is 20 percentage points ahead of its nearest challenger, Sydney-filmed Moulin Rouge.
Rings actor Sir Ian McKellen is the flag-bearer for the British contingency, having gained a significant lead over Training Day’s Ethan Hawke in the best supporting actor field.
The lone American leading the pack in the running for Hollywood’s most prestigious awards is Jennifer Connelly, who has notched over a third of HELLO! readers’ votes for her supporting turn in A Beautiful Mind. The raven-haired actress is closely followed by Brit Kate Winslet, who is behind by less than ten per cent.
