TV phenomenon Pop Idol continued its whirlwind success Tuesday, snagging a pair BAFTA TV Award nominations, including a nod for the top-rated talent programme’s hosts, Ant and Dec. The show also has been shortlisted in the best entertainment programme or series, putting it alongside a dozen other shows – including The Office, Parkinson, and The Blue Planet which have also each garnered two nominations.
Veterans rule in the category for best actor, with Alan Bates, Timothy Spall, Michael Gambon and David Suchet nominated for Britain’s most prestigious broadcasting awards. Michael’s Perfect Strangers is up for three gongs, including best drama serial and best actress for Lindsay Duncan. Other best actress shortlisters include Julie Walters for My Beautiful Son, Russian Brides’s Sheila Hancock and Bob & Rose star Lesley Sharp.
BBC1's Doctors and EastEnders will face off with Hollyoaks and Coronation Street for best soap, while ITV1 has two programmes, At Home With The Braithwaites and fan favourite Cold Feet in the best drama category, going head to head against Clocking Off and Tales From Pleasure Beach.
Controversial TV comedy Brass Eye is up for best comedy programme, along with Bremnor, Bird And Fortune, The Kumars At No 42 and The Sketch Show.
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host Chris Tarrant will present the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday, April 21.
