No need to phone home - the original cast of the 1982 alien flick ET: The Extra-Terrestrial turned out in person on Saturday for the 20th anniversary re-release of the Steven Spielberg classic. The famed director was accompanied by the film’s co-star Drew Barrymore and a host of celebs as he brought a revamped digital version of the hit movie to a whole new generation of filmgoers.
Currently ranked fourth on the list of top box office draws of all times, the tale of a small boy’s friendship with a gentle alien launched the acting career of then six-year-old Drew, who played the adorable and inquisitive Gertie. “It opened the door for me,” said Drew as she hit the red carpet at the gala screening. “There’s no question that without it I wouldn’t have had the ability to live out my destiny.”
Also at the premiere were 30-year-old All The Pretty Horses actor Henry Thomas, who brought the lead role of ET’s best buddy Elliot to life, and co-stars Peter Coyote and Dee Wallace-Stone. Other special guests sneaking a peek at the updated special effects in the new version were AI’s Haley Joel Osment, Scream actress Neve Campbell and Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke, who brought along daughter Maya.
The digitalised E.T. is set to hit UK screens later this month.
