Oscar night wouldn’t be Oscar night without the traditional trip down the red carpet, and though security was particularly tight this year, the multitude of fans packing the streets outside Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre were rewarded with a glamorous parade of gorgeous outfits and glittering stars.

Monster’s Ball actress Halle Berry was looking stunning in a wine-coloured, A-line Elie Saab ballgown with a sheer bodice and strategically placed beaded flowers. The 33-year-old performer, who is nominated for best actress, said: “I just am out of my head. I never thought in my career that my name would ever be mentioned with Oscar. I’m just in shock. I guess maybe tonight at some point it will sink in, but, it’s just incredible.”

Kate Winslet, who arrived with partner Sam Mendes, turned out in a red gown with a single floral strap. Commenting on the comfort level of the elegant number, the 26-year-old actress said: “I wouldn’t like to pee in this.” Kate, who is up for the best supporting actress gong for Iris, also revealed she had not prepared a speech, after having been nominated twice before but being unsuccessful on both occasions.

Fellow Brit and competitor for the best supporting actress accolade, Helen Mirren was looking stunning in a white Giorgio Armani ballgown, while Jennifer Connelly entered in a champagne-colored strapless gown with matching scarf.

But the undoubted talk of the town was Mulholland Drive actress Laura Harring, who turned out wearing a $27 million diamond necklace and a pair of Stuart Weitzman strappy platinum- and diamond-studded high heels valued at $1 million. She was accompanied by three bodyguards.

The men wore tuxedos and and richly tailored suits, often accompanied by glossy, metallic coloured ties. Tom Wilkinson, who is up for best actor for In The Bedroom, wore an Armani suit with a monochromatic tie. His competitor in the same category, Will Smith, sported a golden tie and a double breasted suit and Lord Of The Rings star Ian McKellen opted for a simple tuxedo with a New Zealand good luck charm around his neck.
