After donning a bikini to pay homage to Bond girl Ursula Andress in the upcoming Bond film Die Another Day,Monster’s Ball star Halle Berry has taken on another iconic Hollywood role: that of blaxploitation femme fatale Foxy Brown.
Show biz daily Variety reports that Halle will star in and executive produce a remake of the 1974 film, which starred Pam Grier as a woman looking for revenge on the gangsters who killed her government agent boyfriend.
The flick has become a cult classic for its camp costuming and over the top plot, but MGM chief Alex Gartner says the studio will “take some license in updating the character”. “We’re going to take all the positive aspects of Foxy as a powerful, empowered woman, and we’re going to create a larger-than-life vehicle for Halle,” he says.
The deal means the Oscar winner now has three pictures lined up with the studio: Die Another Day, Foxy Brown and Brown-Eyed Girl, a love story which the Oscar winner and her manager Vincent Cirrincione will produce.
And the Foxy Brown remake isn’t the only film to focus on the famed character. In the next Austin Powers instalment, Goldmember, Destiny’s Child singer Beyonce Knowles will play afro-wigged Foxxy Cleopatra, a comic composite of Foxy and her big-screen contemporary, US Special Agent Cleopatra Jones.
