Gwyneth Paltrow was greeted by a standing ovation on Thursday night for her performance in a special premiere of David Auburn’s Proof at London’s trendy Donmar Warehouse. The actress, who plays a brilliant mathematician scared she may have inherited her father’s mental illness, was reduced to tears by the audience’s response.
On stage for most of the two hour-long play, the Sliding Doors star delivered a powerful performance as the troubled young genius. “She’s very together and if there are any nerves, she has simply done what all good thespians do and hidden them,” one of the production’s executives was reported as saying in the Daily Mail. “She is very on top of things and very professional. There haven’t been any tantrums or rows.”
In taking on a West End run, Gwyneth, who has teamed up again with Shakespeare In Love director John Madden on Proof, follows in the footsteps of Nicole Kidman, who appeared in The Blue Room at the same venue. Her good chum Madonna is also soon to tread the boards, opening in her London stage debut in Up For Grabs at the Wyndham Theatre on Monday.
Proof opens officially on May 15.
