Cameron Diaz, Leonardo di Caprio and Martin Scorcese drew the biggest crowds of the Cannes Film Festival so far, on Monday, for a 20-minute preview of Scorcese’s latest project Gangs Of New York, which is scheduled for release sometime later this year.

Cameron, 29, drew a rapturous round of applause from the waiting French Riviera crowd as she sashayed down the red carpet outside the Palais de Festival in what has been perhaps the festival’s sexiest dress – a see-through sequined black evening gown split to the thigh.

Co-star Leonardo took on the role of arm candy dressed in a sober evening suit and tie. One festival organiser said: “I have never seen such a reaction to a dress at the festival before. After Sharon Stone’s appearance at the festival at the weekend we thought we had seen it all but this was something else. She just looked sensational.”

Among the audience for the preview in Cannes’ Grand Lumiere Theatre were the likes of Sharon Stone, Juliette Binoche and director David Cronenberg.

As the preview closed, Titanic star Leo leapt to his feet to lead a standing ovation for the director. However, it is not exactly clear when the still-unfinished production will be hitting cinema screens. The master of such classics as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, Scorcese began developing Gangs Of New York – which recounts the violent battles between Irish immigrants in mid-nineteenth century New York – in the 1970s.

But, since going into production in 2000, it has been beset by delays and reported on-set clashes. Noticeably absent from the party was one of the film’s main stars, British actor Daniel Day Lewis.
