With his 40th birthday around the corner, Hollywood star Tom Cruise has admitted he has no misgivings about the break-up of his ten-year marriage to Aussie actress Nicole Kidman last year, and has publicly declared his love for new girlfriend Penelope Cruise.
“No regrets,” the Mission Impossible actor tells the British newspaper The Mirror in an interview on Thursday. “I feel no sense of loss.”
Some might accuse him of being ungallant about the split. But it is clear that his relationship to Penelope – whom he met while film co-starring in the thriller Vanilla Sky – has helped him get over the year that almost wiped that famous smile of his face. And he’s in mood to deny it.
“Of course I love (Penelope),” says Tom. “I wouldn’t be with her if I didn’t. She’s a wonderful girl. When you’re in a relationship you have a good time, enjoy each other’s company and live your life. I am very happy in my relationship and have no regrets about what happened in the past.”
Tom continues to maintain contact with Nicole. The two met on while making the 1990 film Days Of Thunder, and married a year later. After a very public split last year, they maintain joint custody of their adopted children, Isabella, nine, and seven-year-old Conor. “As a parent,” he says, “you’re always concerned about your children and the divorce hasn’t changed anything as far as my love and concern for them go. And I know Nic feels that also.”
On reaching the big four-o, Tom says: “I hadn’t thought about it a lot until now. When I think back on my life it’s amazing how things have turned out. I feel very proud. I remember being a young actor, wondering what it would be like to be 40, 50, 60, and hoping I would still be working. I could not have anticipated something like this happening.”
