US actor Woody Harrelson, the star of TV comedy Cheers and movies such as Natural Born Killers, was arrested in London after a bizarre taxi chase through the streets of London in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Woody hailed the cab in Picadilly, central London, before allegedly breaking an ashtray and the door lock and then jumping into another cab. What ensued, the driver of the first taxi told the British tabloid The Sun, was a taxi chase through the streets of the capital that could have come straight out of one of Woody’s films.
“It was like something out of Hollywood. I stayed hot on the tail of the taxi and knew the police were on their way,” said cabbie Les Dartnell. When officers intercepted the cab near Sloane Square, in west London, Woody allegedly jumped out and fled on foot.
“Police chased him and arrested him,” said a police source. The metropolitan police confirmed the arrest of a 40-year-old man early on Thursday morning. “Police were called to reports of a man having allegedly caused criminal damage to a black taxi in the Waterloo Place area, and then fleeing the vehicle,” a Scotland Yard spokesman said.
“Shortly afterwards a 40-year-old man was arrested.” Woody was taken to a central London police station and bailed to return on July 1. Scotland Yard said a report would be sent to the Crown Prosecution Service to decide whether he would stand trial.
