Hollywood star Tom Cruise thrilled thousands of fans on Wednesday with a walkabout before the British premiere of his latest film, the eagerly awaited Minority Report.
Three thousand people, some from as far afield as Scotland and North Wales, packed London’s Leicester Square to catch a glimpse of their hero as he arrived for the screening of the film. Immaculately turned out in a gunmetal grey suit and sunglasses, the actor was greeted with high-pitched screams and chants of “We want Tom”.
To the delight of the crowd he spent an hour-and-a-half walking around the square shaking hands, signing autographs and chatting on people’s mobiles, just as he did at last year’s premiere of Vanilla Sky. Tom, 39, said the only problem was getting the people on the other end of the phone to believe it was really him.
“It’s great fun to chat to people’s friends and family members on the phone,” he said. “I just say ‘Hello, how are you?’, but most of the time they don’t believe it’s me. So sometimes they just hang up.”
Flashing his trademark grin – now complete with brace – Tom posed for the cameras with his British co-star in the $80 million film, Samantha Morton. Dressed in a grey marl Balenciaga mini-dress with a plunging neckline, the youthful star looked stunning with her hair newly chopped and coloured blonde. At 25, with one Oscar nomination already under her belt for Woody Allen’s Sweet And Lowdown, Samantha has now confirmed her arrival on the Hollywood A-list.
Other celebs attending the screening included Prince Albert of Monaco’s former flame Tasha De Vasconcelos, fashion designer Oswald Boateng, television presenter Dani Behr and boxer Chris Eubank.
In the bleak futuristic thriller, Tom plays a Washington DC policeman in 2054 where crime is predicted in advance. Minority Report is one of the most eagerly awaited movies of the year as it team Tom with Hollywood’s most director Steven Spielberg for the first time. The film is based on a short story by Philip K Dick, the American sci-fi writer whose other film credits include Blade Runner and Total Recall.
