‘SIX FEET UNDER’ IS FRONTRUNNER IN EMMY NOMINATIONS

The nominations for the US’s most prestigious television awards, the Emmys, were announced this week. Leading the pack with a whopping 23 nominations is Six Feet Under, a black comedy focused on a dysfunctional family running an independent funeral parlour. Hot on its heels is White House drama West Wing, starring Martin Sheen, which landed 21.

Other contenders in the best drama category are action thriller series 24, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Law & Order.

There were also nods to several UK productions including the Channel 4 Antarctic adventure Shackleton. Its star, Kenneth Branagh, will go head to head with fellow Brits Albert Finney and Michael Gambon in the best actor in a miniseries category. Finney’s nomination comes for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in The Gathering Storm while Michael Gambon picked up his for his role as President Lyndon Johnson in Path To War.

Also recognised for their roles in The Gathering Storm are Vanessa Redgrave, up for an outstanding lead actress gong for her role as Churchill’s wife Clementine, and Oscar-winning actor Jim Broadbent, in the running for outstanding supporting actor in a miniseries.

Up for best comedy show are Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, Will And Grace and Sex And The City, with Friends Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry nominated for individual awards. Fellow nominees in the acting categories include Kelsey Grammer from Frasier and Sex And The City’s Sarah Jessica Parker.

Also in the running for TV honours are movie actors Brad Pitt, nominated in the guest actor category for his cameo on Friends, and Michael Douglas for his role as a gay policeman in Will And Grace.
