Raunchy spy spoof Austin Powers In Goldmember premiered in Los Angeles on Monday with Hollywood celebs flocking to catch a first peek at one of the most eagerly awaited movies of the year.
Stealing the show on the red carpet was Destiny’s Child singer Beyonce Knowles, who sashayed into the screening in a shimmering golden micro-dress. Beyonce is making her acting debut in the movie and critics are already hailing her performance as 1970s super babe detective Foxxy Cleopatra as the arrival of a new star.
There to greet the 20-year-old singer as she arrived was her co-star, veteran actor Michael Caine, who plays the role of Austin Powers’ father. And also posing for the cameras was the comic series’ creator and star himself, the multi-talented Mike Myers, with his wife Robin Ruzan.
In this the third instalment of the raunchy spy series, Austin’s nemesis, Dr Evil – as played by Mike – teams up with Goldmember – also played by Mike – to launch a plan for world domination. After they kidnap the British spy’s father, Austin – yet again, played by Mike – teams up with Foxxy Cleopatra to foil their plans.
After the last two instalments became worldwide hits, Austin Powers In Goldmember has a lot to live up to. But with Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey among the host of stars who have lined up for cameo appearances it seems a good bet to make the grade.
Among the other guests at the screening at the Universal Amphitheatre were Christian Slater, Jack Black, Natalie Portman and the other members of Destiny’s Child.
Austin Powers In Goldmember opens in the US and the UK on July 26.
