Marilyn Monroe fans from all over the world flocked to the star’s Los Angeles grave site on Monday to pay homage to the screen goddess on the 40th anniversary of her death. Said to be the largest crowd in at least twenty years, the hundreds of fans who gathered for the landmark occasion showed that though Marilyn is no longer with us, her legend is alive and well.
Devotees, some who came to the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park from as far away as Europe, paid tribute to the blonde bombshell by placing flowers at her crypt and sharing memories and anecdotes about the star. Some fans came dressed as the Hollywod icon, while others brought memorabilia or showed off their Marilyn tattoos.
Two hundred and fifty Marilyn admirers gathered at the cemetery chapel for a memorial devoted to her memory. The two-hour service, held each year on the anniversary of Marilyn’s 1962 death, was conducted by presidents of the actress’ fan clubs.
The screen legend, a former model who grew up as Norma Jeane Baker before finding fame as Marilyn Monroe, died on August 5, 1962, of an overdose of sleeping pills.
