She’s only made one film in the last five years, but now Demi Moore plans to return to Hollywood in a big way – co-starring alongside Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu in the follow-up to the blockbuster hit Charlie’s Angels.
The second instalment – the first made $40 million in its opening weekend, and went on to take in more than $250 million worldwide – will feature the Ghost star as a kind of fallen angel, who has turned in her halo to join the bad guys. The role marks a return to big budget films for Demi, who received a then-record $12.5 million for the box office bomb Striptease.
One of the most sought-after actresses in the mid-Nineties, Demi has spent the last five years living a low-key lifestyle in the small town of Hailey, Idaho with her three children, making only a single movie – the little-seen Passion Of Mind in 2000 – and the occasional public appearance.
Demi, whose last major film was GI Jane in 1997, isn’t the only newcomer to the Charlie’s Angels cast. US funnyman Bernie Mac, who has his own show Stateside, will be taking over for Bill Murray as detective agency boss Bosley.
And one familiar face will be Jaclyn Smith, who will be reprising her role as Kelly Garrett, the character she played in the original Seventies TV series. The big screen cameo comes at a time when the 54-year-old, who has spent the last three years mainly in the world of TV movies, is battling breast cancer.
Jaclyn’s husband, Dr Brad Allen, an Illinois heart surgeon, says his wife is “fine and doing great” after a lumpectomy and radiation treatment, which she underwent after a routine check-up revealed a lump last month. “She caught it early and is taking a safe and conservative approach,” he added.
