Comedian-turned-actor Robin Williams is generating a lot of buzz for his latest effort, One Hour Photo, a thriller in which he plays a photo-lab technician who becomes obsessed with an idyllic suburban family after developing their snapshots. But it was the actor himself who was the picture of happiness at the film’s Beverly Hills premiere on Thursday, flashing a grin as he shared the spotlight with his wife and son.

Also on the red carpet for the premiere were the film’s co-star, ER hunk Eriq LaSalle, as well as model Tatjana Patitz, actress Gina Gershon and rockers Anthony Kiedis and Michael Stipe.

Robin has traded in his famed nice-guy roles for a creepy new image in his three latest movies – One Hour Photo, Insomnia and last spring’s black comedy Death to Smoochy – which he has dubbed the “trilogy of terror”. “I think as an actor you get to a point where you’ve made all the money, accomplished a lot, so why not go in different directions?” he says, adding: “It’s about adding colours to the palette, not about doing something for the sake of doing something different.”

One Hour Photo, written and directed by music video director Mark Romanek, the mind behind stylish clips for Madonna, Janet Jackson and Nine Inch Nails, is now playing in the US and will hit UK screens in October. And for fans who’d like to take in Robin’s full terror trilogy, Insomnia can be seen in Britain starting August 30 and Death To Smoochy debuts in wide release October 4.
