Al Pacino has become legendary in the world of cinema, and is known for his tough-as-nails leads in classic films such as Scarface, Serpico and The Godfather. Fans can quote the larger-than-life actor’s memorable lines with much greater ease than they can run off facts from his closely-guarded off-screen life – and Pacino likes it that way.
“Shakespeare said ‘the play is the thing’ that comes first,” the actor told Fashion Wire Daily. “You see, it is one of the reasons why in my career, I have tried to do less interviews, public appearances and stuff, because… I was always concerned that my personality would somehow get in there and take over, and that would come before the character… I have been very careful to direct my personal appearances in life in a way that didn’t overshadow the parts I play.”
One aspect of his personal life Al does talk about is the joy his 19-month-old twins – a boy and a girl whose mother is actress Beverly D’Angelo – have brought to his life. It’s a topic, however, that he approaches with his usual reticence. “Without sounding, whatever, they have certainly given my life a lift,” he says. “So what else can I say?”
Those who have followed the career of the eight-time Oscar nominee, who has released two films, Insomnia and Simone in the last four months, might be surprised that he considers himself “lucky” to be in the business aged 62. “I’m very fortunate to be making movies and to still be offered films… but at the same time, maybe there’s a comforting thought in just thinking that I can float around for a while,” he says. “Just float and see where it goes. I think I’ve earned that in the last couple of years.”
