Fans waiting outside the Odeon Cinema in London’s Leicester Square where Oliver Parker’s new film The Importance Of Being Earnest was premiered on Wednesday were treated to an eclectic fashion show from its celebrity guests.

Dressed in a black trouser suit accessorised with an orange scarf, the movie’s star Dame Judi Dench wowed crowds as she paused outside the venue to sign autographs before entering the theatre. The actress plays Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s classic, while her daughter Finty Williams also appears as a younger version of her mother’s character.

Actress Helena Bonham Carter made a highly individual fashion statement in a dramatic combination of veiled hat, frilled jacket and flower-girl skirt. Also creating a stir in a shocking pink skirt and matching cowboy boots was Jade Jagger, who arrived in a Soho rickshaw with one of the film’s stars Rupert Everett. Having already entered the cinema, the actor came back out twice to be greeted by rapturous applause from waiting crowds. Describing the film as a sort of “Carry On” vehicle, he added: “It’s a really funny English movie.”

Also attending the screening were comedian Ruby Wax and TV presenter Angus Deaton. Actor Colin Firth, who plays John Worthing in the comedy of manners, was unable to attend due to filming commitments in France.

The Importance Of Being Earnest, which is the first complete production to come out of London’s Ealing Studios in over 40 years, goes on general release in the UK on Friday.
