Kate Winslet and her boyfriend Sam Mendes stepped out arm in arm in public for the first time in the UK on Wednesday at the premiere of the director's new film The Road To Perdition. Although the couple went public about their romance in December 2001 following the actress’ break-up with husband Jim Threapleton, this was the first time they have attended a London premiere as a couple.
Kate, stunning in a little black Dolce & Gabbana number which showed off her curves, offered her partner a reassuring kiss as they entered the Empire Cinema in Leicester Square.
The director revealed, however, that the 26-year-old actress was more nervous about his big night than he was. “I said ‘What are you worrying about? It’s not your film’. I think when it is her own film she feels more in control. It’s often more difficult to read bad things about other people than it is about yourself,” he added.
Although she has recently described their relationship as “very happy, unbelievably happy”, when asked at the premiere about any plans the pair may have to tie the knot, Kate merely said: “Get out of here”.
The film’s star, Tom Hanks, was greeted by a rapturous welcome from the awaiting crowd when he arrived at the cinema with his wife Rita Wilson. While co-stars Jude Law and Paul Newman were not present, other guests included actor Michael Gambon, TV presenter Ruby Wax and Big Brother’s Alex Sibley. The premiere was followed by a star-studded bash at a private club in the capital’s historic Inns of Court.
