Perennial favourite Goldie Hawn is hitting the screens again - in a comedy that teams her with the equally powerful Susan Sarandon – on the same day her daughter Kate Hudson sees her new movie made public.

Both Goldie’s The Banger Sisters and Kate’s The Four Feathers go on general release in the US today, but Goldie is quick to quash any suggestion that the timing might cause competitive friction between the two women.

"It's a magical, amazing thing for a mother and daughter to be in movies at the same time,” explains Goldie with her customary enthusiasm. “It's just so much fun."

And apart from their close relationship preventing any rivalry creeping into the equation, Goldie and Kate are starring in very different films. The Four Feathers is an epic drama set in the 19th century and adapted from A Mason’s classic novel. Kate depicts the fiancée of a young British officer who is branded a coward when he resigns on a question of principle.

“Katie is an unbelievable dramatic actress, so she has the opportunity to do all kinds of things I didn't,” points out her Oscar-winning mum, who’s best known for her inimitable comedy acting. “That wasn't my destiny... Her talents are huge, and she is so broad in terms of her scope of performing.”

Meanwhile, The Banger Sisters is a comedy portraying Goldie as a leather-clad rock groupie who embarks on a mission to rescue her former best friend, played by Susan Sarandon, from a stultifyingly irreproachable existence as a political wife and mother. The two actresses, both in their mid fifties but famed for being apparently ageless, say they hit it off from the start.

“Goldie and I had a chemistry and a love for each other that was genuine," says Susan, "and that may have brought something to the movie that wouldn't necessarily have been there had it been other people."

Although their films are being released simultaneously, Goldie laughs off the idea of rivalry between her and Kate. "It's magical for a mother and daughter to be in films at the same time," says the Oscar winner

Besides, their two films are very different, points out Goldie. Here we see Kate in a scene from the 19th-century epic drama The Four Feathers
