Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas celebrated their joint birthday with fellow actor Christopher Reeve, who also shares the same special day, at a fundraising Magical Birthday Bash in one of New York’s plushest hotels, surrounded by hordes of celebrity friends.
“To be celebrating my birthday with such illustrious Hollywood stars as Michael and Catherine makes it all the more special,” said Christopher, who was turning 50. The actor, perhaps best known for his role as Superman, was paralysed after a fall from a horse seven years ago. He threw the glittering bash to raise funds for his charity The Paralysis Foundation.
Among the big-hearted friends who came along to party with the best were Robin Williams, who’s turned away from his familiar comic persona with his latest film One-Hour Photo and TV doyenne Barbara Walters. Also present were Sex In The City star Kim Cattrall and actress Susan Sarandon, currently hitting the screens alongside Goldie Hawn in the new comedy The Banger Sisters.
Catherine turned on high wattage glamour for the event, making her appearance in a sleek black sleeveless gown with plunging neckline topped off with discreet sparklers and an intricate, ultra-smooth chignon.
“She is delighted to be able to help raise money for charity,” said Catherine’s spokesperson before the Magical Birthday Bash. “Catherine and Michael are close friends of Christopher.” It was no surprise to see the high-powered couple spending the evening of their birthday at a charity event – for their own wedding, in 2000, they requested that guests make donations to their son Dylan’s foundation, rather than give traditional presents.
