Oscar nominee Nicole Kidman was on hand for the LA premiere of The Ring on Wednesday, lending her support to close friend – and star of the thriller – up-and-coming actress Naomi Watts.
But Nicole wasn’t the only big name from Down Under to cheer on the Mulholland Drive actress, who took home the Hollywood Breakthrough Acting award this week in Beverly Hills. Hunky actor Heath Ledger, wearing a pinstriped suit and open-necked shirt, held Naomi’s hand as the couple strolled up the red carpet.
Nicole and British-born Naomi, who grew up in Australia, are longtime friends and starred together in the 1991 Aussie feature Flirting. And now that the 5ft 5in blonde’s star is on the rise, seeing how her chum has become a household name has helped Naomi cope with life in Hollywood. “I’ve experienced it with her, and when you’re a friend, you watch and learn,” Naomi says. However, she adds: “It’s not that you ask advice and get pointers.”
The Ring, a remake of one of Japan's most successful thrillers, opens around the US on October 18, and premieres in the UK next February.
