In a big week for Hollywood premieres, one of the more glitzy screenings to take place was that of Salma Hayek’s Frida Kahlo biopic, Frida, at the Bing theatre in Los Angeles.

Dressed in a stunning pink gown, the sexy Mexican star turned out on Monday night with boyfriend Edward Norton, who also has a part in the film, and was joined by cast members Geoffrey Rush and Alfred Molina. Other famous names on the red carpet included Splash actress Daryl Hannah and sultry songstress Paulina Rubio.

It’s the first time Salma and Edward have worked together on a film, and the two looked very much the Hollywood couple as they arrived hand in hand for the LA showing.

Frida, which was first screened at the Venice Film Festival in August, chronicles the lives of the world-famous Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Salma summed up the story in her own words: “It's a love story about a hairy woman and a fat man,” she says. “They were communists. She was bisexual. It is a period piece. It was not attractive to most people.”

After fighting off competition from Madonna and Jennifer Lopez, and amid growing public interest in Frida Kahlo's life and her hauntingly surreal self-portraits, Salma was thrilled to land the part she had always dreamed of. “The day I showed up at the set - that was the most exciting. That feeling will not be topped by anything else.”

Frida opens on limited release in the US on October 25.
