Gwyneth Paltrow has made her first public appearance since the sudden loss of her beloved father Bruce, just over two weeks ago. Smiling faintly and putting on a brave face the Shakepeare In Love star attended the 50th anniversary gala for the National Film Theatre at London’s South Bank, where she presented an award to friend and movie producer Harvey Weinstein.
“It’s been a really tough time for her,” said Harvey. “I asked her not to come, but she said she would come anyway. That’s the type of girl she is.”
The Oscar winner’s father, 58-year-old director and producer Bruce Paltrow, died from complications resulting from throat cancer earlier this month at a hospital in Rome. He had joined his daughter in Italy to celebrate her 30th birthday.
As Lord Attenborough, Alan Rickman and Jim Broadbent arrived for the ceremony, Adrian Wooton, artistic director of the British Film Institute, revealed that Gwyneth felt strongly about presenting Harvey and his brother Bob with the accolade. Their Miramax studios have produced some of Gwyneth’s most successful films, including The Talented Mr Ripley.
The awards gala was followed by dinner at the Savoy, and was also attended by Joan Bakewell, Jane Horrocks, Rhys Ifans, Alan Parker and Sir Derek Jacobi.
