Nearly two years on from her split with screen icon Tom Cruise, Oscar nominee Nicole Kidman has decided to set the record straight on the relationship and the reasons behind the painful split.
In the article from December's issue of Vanity Fair, the Moulin Rouge star gamely answers the unspoken questions that have arisen since the reign of Hollywood's most famous couple ended in divorce in 2001. Tom's religion, Scientology, was not at the root of the break-up, she insists, and their nearly-ten-year union was a "real" one.
"The marriage existed because it was two people in love," says Nicole, who admits she was once "desperate" to have a baby with Tom. "It was that simple."
The flame-haired actress also addresses rumours about the couple's sexuality head-on, including her husband's filing of multi-million dollar lawsuits against those who perpetuate the talk. "They've said I'm gay, they've said everyone's gay," says Nicole. And though she doesn't "believe in doing huge lawsuits about that stuff", she says: "Tom does. That's what he wants to do, that's what he's going to do. You do not tell Tom what to do. That's it. Simple. He is a force to be reckoned with."
The rumours that have plagued the couple throughout their relationship – and even after its demise – don't get under the actress' skin. "I just want to do my work, raise my kids and hopefully find somebody who I can share my life with again," she says, adding: "I don't know what my future is. But I really don't care what anybody else is saying."
