George Clooney played host to a roll-call of A-List stars as his directorial debut, Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind premiered in Los Angeles.

He was joined by Cindy Crawford, Brad Pitt, Vince Vaughn and Mira Sorvino for the event. Drew Barrymore, who also stars in the film, playfully winked at photographers when she arrived.

The movie follows the story of Chuck Barris, producer of TV show The Dating Game, who claims he worked as an assassin for the CIA when he wasn't too busy with light entertainment. Asked whether the story is true, George said: "I didn't want to know and I didn't want to ask. I thought it was interesting if it was true and I thought it was interesting if wasn't."

While the film marks a new turn in the 42-year-old's career, it is the performance of actor Sam Rockwell that is being hailed as a major breakthrough. He has already appeared in a number of hit-films, includingThe Green Mile and Charlie's Angels, but this is his debut in a leading role.

Saying his friend should receive an Oscar nomination for his work on the film, George was lavish in his praise: "It's just a great performance. It's such a hard thing to do when you're playing someone that other people know, and to do it as well as he did. He's phenomenal."

For his part, Rockwell was more interested in complimenting his director's abilities. "I don't know if people realise how really intensely smart and creative he is. The film is really beautifully crafted." British audiences will be able to judge for themselves when Confessions has its UK release in the spring.
