Hollywood hardman Russell Crowe has proposed to girlfriend Danielle Spencer and the two are to celebrate their engagement with a £1-million New Year's Eve party at his ranch in Australia. "I feel a great need to wake up with her as many days of my life as I can," said the actor, revealing his romantic side.
The couple were having dinner in a fashionable Sydney restaurant when the actor took a £40,000 diamond ring from his pocket and popped the question. "He wanted it to be a flawless diamond," said his publicist Wendy Day. "He thought flawless would be a good omen for their future."
The 38-year-old even phoned Danielle's parents to ask their permission before proposing. It was not until two days later that he phoned 32-year-old singer, however, and asked her to meet him for dinner at Darcy's Restaurant in Sydney.
When she arrived, Russell was looking well-groomed and wearing an immaculate suit, in contrast to his usual casual appearance. She soon discovered why, and not long afterwards family members began arriving to help them celebrate.
The two originally met 13 years ago on the set of The Crossing, a low budget Australian film. They parted company after the Gladiator star's Hollywood career took off, and Russell was linked with several actresses, but it was Danielle who accompanied him to the Oscars earlier this year.
A date for the wedding has not been set as yet, but it is expected to be in Sydney, sometime next spring.
